Aegon Tennis news,Sharapova has busy day

Sharapova has busy day in Edgbaston

Maria Sharapova had a busy day at the office on Thursday winning two matches to reach the AEGON Classic quarter final.

Sharapova had to first complete her rain interrupted second round match from Wednesday against American Alexa Glatch 6-3 6-4.

The former Wimbledon champion then returned to court 90 minutes later to defeat Italian No.7 seed Francesca Schiavone 6-1 6-3 to book her place in the last eight.

“It was definitely a little bit strange not finishing yesterday and coming back today,” said Sharapova, who has won the title in Edgbaston on two previous occasions.

“It could have only taken a few minutes to finish or another hour. But I did the right things in both matches today and played really well. Overall, it was a good day.”

In the quarter final, Sharapova will meet Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, last year’s beaten finalist, who saw off Italian Roberta Vinci 6-1 6-4 in the third round.

Sania Mirza of India, who knocked out British No.1 Anne Keothavong on Wednesday, needed three sets to seal her spot in the quarter final, beating Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2.

The two big upsets of the day saw the No.1 seed, China’s Jie Zheng, and the No.3 seed, Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak, bow out against Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova and Hungary’s Melinda Czink respectively.
