Roddick through to quarters at Queen's Club
Andy Roddick knocked out Lleyton Hewitt in the AEGON Championships third round on Thursday.
In a match dominated by big serving, Roddick, the No.2 seed, came through two tie-break sets to edge past Hewitt 7-6(2) 7-6(4).
“It was tough out there today,” said Roddick. “The wind is blowing pretty good and it’s gusting. So I don’t know if I ever felt comfortable, but I was able to just focus on holds and played alright in the breakers.”
Both players have won the title at Queen’s Club on four previous occasions and Roddick will now be attempting to lift the trophy for a record-breaking fifth time.
In the quarter final, the American will meet big serving Croat Ivo Karlovic, a former runner-up at Queen’s Club, after the No.9 seed defeated French qualifier Nicolas Mahut 6-3 6-4 in his last 16 match.
Andy Murray, the top seed and world No.3, once again looked in excellent form as he set up a quarter final clash with American Mardy Fish by beating Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4 6-4.
“I thought that was good,” said Murray. “I didn’t give many opportunities on my service games and I broke once a set so it was solid. He started very well and made it difficult for me but I came through the tough parts well.”
James Blake, the third American through to the last eight, defeated Sam Querrey 6-4 4-6 6-3 and will now meet Russian Mikhail Youzhny who battled past Gilles Simon 6-1 2-6 6-2. The last quarter final match will be contested between two unseeded players, Belgian Steve Darcis and Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, a former world No.1.
